Welcome back. For this episode, we’re back in the big library. Look at that, I got two of these books. Fact, fantasy, emotional factors in, no, the inner personality of… Psychiatry, nightmare, dreamscapes, how things work…

I like this. Frontier Pistols and Revolvers. This is for all your gun fanatics out there. Let’s do a little research on some old guns.

All right. We got firearms in American history, Samara Colt and the modern revolver. Sorry. So you guys can see me. All right. The Civil War, boxed and engraved, armed Smith and Wesson, the Colt Peacemaker and his competitors at the card table, the dawn of modern firearm…

This [inaudible 00:01:47] book is actually really interesting. Well everybody knows what Smith and Wesson is. So let’s, no. This is difficult. I should be live so you guys could help me. I want to read the card table and the Colt Peacemaker, and… I want to read all of them as a matter of fact. Yeah, we’re going to go ahead and go with Smith and Wesson. Everyone knows what Smith and Wesson is.

68. Oh yeah. Look at these pictures here. Here let me show you. This is Civil War. We’ll go, flip through them. Yeah, it’s 68.

All right. Put you back where you can see me. Working in manufacturing… All right. So a little history of Smith and Wesson. Working in the Robbins and Lawrence Cannon Factory in Windsor, Vermont. There were two gunsmith, Horace Smith, 1808 to 1893, and Daniel B. Wesson, 1825 to 1906. There are two names appeared together for the first time on February 14th, 1854 on a patent for a repeating revolver, the Volcanic.

On June 20th, 1854, the Smith and Wesson company was founded and began production of this pistol. It was a financial disaster however, and the two inventors ended up selling off the patents and their machinery, but they had other plans in mind and they were already working towards a release of a truly revolutionary revolver. In 1857, the year the great Sam Colt legal monopoly was due to expire. In August of 1854, they registered a patent on a small metal case cartridge, inspired by the work of Frenchmen, Flobert. It was the birth of the modern rimfire cartridge. Okay.

And then, like I said, we’re getting close to the five minutes. So I won’t… But there are some great pictures in here. Let me show you this real quick. I mean, obviously I’ll go through and show more pictures and things on the longer version, but I’m trying to keep these to five minutes. So I hope I sparked your interest on a little bit of Smith and Wesson and the volcanic repeating pistol. Here we go. So this is the pistol that in 1851, they patented. Manufactured by Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, New Haven, Connecticut. They manufactured 3000 of them. Damn. Self-propelling.

Yeah. So we’re at the five minute mark. Here I’ll show you it real quick. Like there’s just four more. Wow. They got a whole bunch of… Yeah… Hold on one second. Oh, wow, yeah. Yeah, look at these. I have to look at this. So yeah. If you don’t like guns it’s not interesting, but I like Smith and Wesson and I like pistols, so it’s really interesting. I like this. I like that one. All right? The way it’s made. All right. So we’re going to go through each one of these guns. Right? Wow. Commercially, 70,000 contracted Russia from 1873 to 1878. Look at this one. No, it’s this one. Look at that. I had no idea. So we’re going to learn a lot about Smith and Wesson. I had no idea that they… Look at this, another commercially contracted to the Russian, the first model. Look at that. Well, obviously this is the first one. This is the second one. And this is the third one. Wow. They did 41,000 of these to Russia. All right. That’s very interesting. I can’t wait till we get into this. This is going to really be interested. Look at, there’s some more. Talking about Japan. Oh, I’m sorry. We’re over the five minute mark. I apologize. Horse Packing

Well, hello. Welcome to another episode of Erik picks a random book. All right. Yesterday, we picked from this side of the library. This time, we’re going to go across the hall on to the other side of the library and see what we have over here. (silence).

You know what? We’re going to do something completely random. Wait a minute. I mean, like I said, there’s some great ones. This is just random. Horse Packing. All right.

For whenever we go on a trail and we’re going to be cowboys, we’re going to learn how to pack a horse. All right. There it is. Now, again, let’s go through the chapters. I’m going to have to figure out how to do this a better way. So, yeah. Much better way. This upside down? No. It’s not upside down. It just seems like this is easier.

So, we have the introduction. Organization for military purposes, general rules, marching, records of endurance, standard pack mules, cross sling, one-man cargo sling. Oh, wow. These are a lot of different hitches and things. I’m curious because I’m not in the military anymore, or I never was. Organization for military purposes. All right. Let’s look at that. Page 15. All right. How old is this book? It’s not even old at all. It’s 2007. They must have tooken it from someone from a very long time ago.

See standard of organization for military purposes. So, all right. So, this is what we need for the military purposes. “A pack train consists of 50 pack mules, one bell horse, and 14 riding mules, one pack master, one Cargador, one blacksmith, one cook, and 14 packers. With the complete outfit for camp and substance and the requisite number of riding saddles and aparejos.”

I guess we need to take that chapter and figure out what that is. Well, that’s it. All right. So, we know if we wanted to go ahead and pack some horses with the military, we’re going to reiterate, we need 50 pack mules, one bell horse, 14 riding mules, one pack master, one Cargador, one blacksmith, one cook, and 14 packers. All right, whatever that means. All right. Horse packing 101. Oh, this is interesting. Look at this.

On the road or trail in any country a packing mule with a load of 250 can make 25 miles a day without… Wow. Wow. That’s longer than what I can walk. I’m not trying to walk 25 miles a day. So, what it’s saying is… This is actually really interesting, is one pack mule can hold 250 pounds a day for 25 miles a day without difficulty. So, that’s what it says is that’s 250 pounds and 25 miles a day was basically normal for the military and the march. (silence).

All right. Well, this is actually got interesting. I was making fun of it at the beginning, but not anymore. I started reading a little bit, and it’s actually pretty interesting. So, what I’m going to do is… Wait a minute. Are we just keep on going through chapters? What’s going on? Well, now I actually want to read the whole thing. There’s 172 pages. I’m not going to do that, but I will eventually. Then it’ll be a much larger class. I don’t know.

Wouldn’t it be great if you are the kind of person who loves to peer over the horizon? The future fascinates you as if it were projected on a wall, and you see in detail what the future might hold, and this detailed picture keeps pulling you forward into tomorrow. 300 Of The Most Asked Questions About Organic Gardening

What do we talk about today? Hmm. Oh, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be moving this around so you can see what I’m looking at. All right. So I moved the books. We found something halfway interesting, but this is the book that I was trying to find, 300 of the Most Asked Questions About Organic Gardening. Now, I’ve tried to be a gardener. I was just not, maybe I’m trying to be a farmer and a gardener. My end results of being a farmer/gardener is I just don’t think that animals like me, or vegetables. I like them. I like to eat the vegetables. Look at this, 72. I like to eat the vegetables and all that kind of good stuff, and I like to eat animals, but they just don’t really work with me very well. But that goes back from when I was a kid. I couldn’t keep anything alive when I was a kid, either.

Let’s go. Compost, right? Let’s do the importance of composting, 45. So, because you know, waste, food waste in America is absolutely ridiculous, we throw away so much food. Sorry about this. This book is pretty tight. It’s not opening well for me. Probably no one’s ever read this book. I’m one of the few.

All right. Importance of composting. How can compost be defined? The compost heap in your garden is an intensified version of the process of death and rebuilding, which is going on almost everywhere in nature. In the course of running a garden, there’s always an accumulation of organic waste and different sorts of leaves, glass, grass, weeds, twigs, and since time immemorial, gardeners have been accumulating this material in piles, eventually to spread it back on the soil as rich, dark hummus. Yeah. Hummus.

Because the compost heap is symbolic of nature’s best effort to build soil, and because compost is the most efficient and practical fertilizer, it has become the heart of the organic method. It is the basic tool necessary to do the job, creating the finest soil. The materials must be decomposed because compost. Okay, so I’m not going to read it at all, but basically we’re skipped down.

Compost is more than fertilizer or healing agent for the soil’s wounds. It is a symbol … Boo. Organic matter is the raw material of the composting … Boo. The degree of composition is referred to as the finished or … Boo.

Not a very good definition. I’ll use my definition, but we’re, you know, I’m going to write a paper anyways, we’ll go over a couple more questions. Compost is basically all your trash that, let’s say you eat an apple, all right, and your core, throw it into a pile, all your vegetable waste, throw it into a pile. And it’s kind of … It’s like having your own dump at your house, but it’s all natural stuff.

So with your leaves, if you ever notice leaves, after a while, leaves, leaves, well, one leaves retain water, right? And then when you crush them all up, it helps with your gardening, right? So that’s one good thing, it holds the water better, and, well, and if you talk to fishermen, you know what I’m saying? Some of their good worms come from, you know, worms and dirt are a good thing. Sometimes you’ll find some of the best little wigglers, whatever, under wet leaves, so that’s why they’re saying put your leaves, put your sticks, put your different thing, and during the compostion, or the decomposition, decomposition, or you know what I’m talking about, compost … When it’s breaking down, right? When the things are breaking down, which uses that language. I can stumble with my words all the time.

But what happens is the worms and the earth kind of goes in there and starts eating and stuff and starts breaking it down naturally. And then when the worms and all the other kinds of stuff poop, then they create better, better, more fertile soil. Does that makes sense? Because every time that you’re growing stuff, your plants that you’re growing extracts then the nutrients, right, out of the ground. So what they do this for the building a compost pile is it’s basically all your trash, or all the nutrients that the plants have stolen from the ground, you’re putting it all in one central place, and then you’re redistributing it to the ground.

See? I know a little bit. I might not be able to grow anything or keep anything alive, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t learn how to do it.

All right. Well today… Trying not to get the light in your guy’s eyes sorry about that. Today we’re going to be in my fireplace room. I mean, it’s a little messy right now, so I’m not going to show you, but in this room, it’s kind of more school books and music books. So when we’re looking through kind of look for music book I guess. I got some kids’ books in here, but we’ll go over to this section. Music and art, I guess. All right. I get it were kind of cheating and a little bit, because it’s not random because I already kind of knew we were picking music or art. But again, maybe we’ll find something different. (Silence)

I [inaudible 00:01:04] Grimm’s Fairy Tales, that’s old. Look at that another sales book. Let me turn this down because I want to read it later. Turn it the other way. Popular Music in the United States. Let’s go, Segregation of Popular Music. Race music, the popular sounds of black America. Well, so blues, jazz, and country. Blues, jazz and country more equal than separate. And these are just some little chapters of it. Yeah, I think this is going to be an interesting one. So, I mean, this is going to be pretty long from 38 to 55. So… Let’s go 39. We’re going blues, jazz and country more equal than separate, right? there. Where are we? 39.

Yeah, this is going to be pretty interesting. Okay. This is more like a textbook. (Silence) [inaudible 00:04:25] (Silence). All right, well listen to this guys. So this guy named Polk Brockman owned a furniture store in Atlanta, Georgia, and his customers were both black and white and remember this was in the 1920s. So if you know the deep South or in Georgia in the 1920s, it wasn’t very, very friendly. Let’s just put it like that. And what he said is he put a phonographs and being attuned to musical tastes of his diverse clientele and Brockman and others like him, Sam Price in Dallas and Henry S. Spear in Jackson, often served as local talent scouts for record companies. In fact, Brockman had a very lucrative sideline supply in both black and white talent to Oakey Record Company where black artists were assigned to the labels, 14,000 race Series and the white artists to the 15,000 Series as marketing categories.

Designations like race and Hillberry intentionally separated. Artists are on graceful lines and conveyed the impression that their music came from different sources. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Across the social divide of segregation these artists were aware of and influenced by each other’s work. In cultural terms, blues, jazz, and country are far more equal than they were separate. Look at that. So in the twenties, they purposely separated the music and made it seem like they were coming from different places to fuel racism. Did not know that so again, what we’re going to do with this video, if that was interesting to you, which it was to me. Talking Books Promo

All right. Erik Johnson, FYMM Inspiration bookstore on Amazon. All right. So what we have today is a lot of kids’ books. We’re going to randomize, for the Christmas season, kids’ books for you. We’re going to put a whole bunch of kids’ books in a box, and sell it to you for a great price. So what this does is create the perfect gift for your kid, for your grandkids, for anybody that you know has kids or little ones. So each one of these boxes, you’re going to get roughly 20 to 30 books per box. So what we’re trying to do is promote reading and education in the youth of today and the little ones, the kids. And we’re also… Because sometimes when you have kids, it’s not very easy, you know what I’m saying? We’ve got a lot of responsibilities, got to buy a whole bunch of different things. So we’re trying to create or stimulate readings, stimulate knowledge for a great price for all you parents or grandparents out there.

Discover The Secrets Of Heaven

All right, let’s pick a book. Let’s see. I’ll try to go slower so you can kind of see the books and then if you see something interesting, make sure you write in the comments and then what we’ll do is, depending on my schedule, I’ll try to make sure I pick that book. Also, depending on how many different people see something they want me to discuss.

First things first. Let’s look at this. A friend of mine just passed away over the weekend, a car accident, horrible, there we go, horrible thing. I would like to think he’s in heaven or whatever religion you believe in. Hopefully he’s in heaven’s equivalent. He was a great guy. Let’s sit there and see if we can find something in this book. Let’s go through the chapters together.

Three parts of eternity. We’re here to care … No one cares. Here we go. A prospect of heaven makes death easy, 17. Oh wow. It’s a little poem. I’ll read it and then what we’ll do is we’ll go from there. There is a land of pure delight where saints and mortal reign. Infinite day excludes the night and pleasure banishes pain. There’s everlasting spring abates and never withering flowers. Death like an error, a sea divides, this heavenly land of ours. Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood stand dressed in living green. So to the Jews of old Canaan stood while Jordan rolled between. But timorous mortals start and strength to cross this narrow sea and linger shivering on the brink and fare to launch away. Oh, could we make our doubts remove these [gormy 00:04:21] doubts that rise and see that the Canaan that we love with un-beclouded eyes. Could we but climb where Moses stood and view the landscape oh year. Now Jordan’s stream nor death’s cold flood should fright us from the shore.

I don’t know. It didn’t really rhyme at parts I thought it was going to rhyme. I mean, I’m going to have to read it a couple more times and then write my paper on that one.

Initial response is that it was horrible. But wait a minute. You know what I’m saying? I got to read it. If you read below, it will be my more in-depth analysis of it. Again, we are discussing Discover the Secrets of Heaven. In that great book, we talked about a prospect of heaven makes death easy.

We all have different aspects in life. We all journey to the end in completely different routes and the end being death, obviously. Each of us, no one lives the same life. Drives of a Lifetime

All right. Back again, back again. Let’s find another book, right? Hm. Trying to think which bookcase we’re going to start with today. Do we want to learn…? You know what? Let’s learn National Geographic. That’s always fun, because that’s more of like a picture book, you know what I mean? So we’ll go down here.

All right. So, we got this one, this Sublime Nature by National Geographic, we got Night Vision, Journeys of a Lifetime. Over here, Drivers of a Lifetime. Wonder what that is? That looks like all of them that are very easy to see right here. So we’ll pick… Let’s pick this one. I was wondering what this one was. So we’ll just see what this is. Drives of a Lifetime: 500 Most Spectacular Trips. Can you see it? All right. Good. All right. Let’s check it out.

Oh, wow. Let’s check it out, right? We have… Over Hills and Mountains, By Sea & Shore, River, Valleys and Canyons… Less Traveled, Village, Urban, Driving Through History. I’m Pisces. I got to see this. I want to see this. So we’re going to 60, Lakes and Mountains. It’s going to take us a minute to get there properly. That’s why we wanted picture books. Look at this. Can you see it? No, you can’t. Yeah. That’s a good angle for y’all. I like that. That’s a nice picture. Look at that. The Philippines. Okay. Oh, no, that’s Panama.

Let’s get to 60 before we take the whole video looking at pictures. Let’s see. Can you see? Okay. Good. All right. We got Along Newfoundland’s Shore. No, that’s cold. No one wants to go up north. Breton [inaudible 00:02:55] Island, Miami and the Keys, Maine’s Rugged Coast, Chesapeake. This is all cold stuff. I don’t want to go to none of this. I mean, that would be cool to see, a killer whale jump out of the water, but this is all cold stuff. Okay. There we go. Now we’re starting to warm up a little bit.

Here we go. The Winding Road to Hana. Can you see it? We got from the Kahului Airport in Hawaii to Hana, Hawaii. It’s a two hour trip. You can go year round. Yeah. It even tells you Paia, P-A-I-A, I don’t know how to pronounce that, is the last opportunity to buy gas before Hana, so just remember that. And then look, you’ll probably see some… Yeah, look, “Surfer rides mighty wave at Hopika…” No, “Hookipa…” Yeah. Whatever. “…Beach Park near…” Yeah, man. I’m not very good at pronouncing the words. I’m just let you guys look at the pictures. Let’s just look at the pictures. Be happy with the pictures. But yeah, let’s see.

“You can see more than 500 species and plants on your two-hour trip.” You got the Puohokamoa Falls. “Beyond is the Kaumahina State Wayside Park.” Okay, here you go. You can go to the Arboretum. It’s the Keanae… Yeah, that one. All right. When I write my little article, this is too short to… There’s no way I’ll be able to write a long article off of that, but we’ll be able to… I’ll go over a much more of the different coastal paths that you can take that look beautiful. See, I thought we were going to see more of this, right? The French Riviera, but they kind of lied to us and gave us a whole bunch of Canada, and Canada, and Maine. And here’s one to Florida. So three out of four are freezing cold. Maryland. No, I mean, this is all cold places, like I said.

But it looked pretty cool. Right? I mean, I’m interested to read about it. I’m a little disappointed because I’m never going to take those trips. It’s way too cold. I’m more of a warm person, a warm climate person. So yeah, we found at least one, right? That’s great. So we can go swimming in one of the places. All right, catch you later. Since I Have Been Working On My Library

Sorry, it’s taking me so long to check back in. I think my final count for that day, was 477 books can’t remember exactly. I got a picture somewhere, but these books right here, while I was doing that I had a great idea, these books right here, they don’t scan to Amazon, so it doesn’t really fit my business model. And I don’t really know what’s in here, but I was like, you know what? Since I’ve been working on my library, I might as well help other people build their library. I’ll show you pictures of my library, once I’m done doing this, I’ll take a couple pictures. It’s not done. It’s I mean, obviously as an everything, it’s a work in progress. But what I want to do is offer these boxes right here it’s not organized, Cause I just had the idea when I was doing it all these boxes right here, what we got, we got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12. 12-13 boxes that I’m giving away for free. All you have to do is just pay for shipping. Now, since this is a brand new idea, that’s why it’s going away for free. Cause I didn’t think about it until right now, and in these boxes, it could be a whole bunch of repeats, not repeats because like I said, it’s not organized, but might as well help everyone get into the game of building their library at a decent price. So go are basically for free. So just pay shipping and I’ll go ahead and ship these box one of these boxes to you, but since it did give me a great idea. What I am going to do is I have all these boxes or these books over here that don’t fit my business model shipping to Amazon, not the one in the boxes, the big boxes. Now some of those are going to go into my library, but for the most part, what I’m going to do is I’m going to take the UPS boxes, UPS as the United States postal service. So there you go this box right here, so this is one of the medium ones and then this is one of the large ones. And what I’m going to do is on film with these books right here. And I have a lot more books in my garage and I’m going to sell a random box full of books for each and everyone. And to help you build your library and to promote education and to help promote education and to help people build their libraries and, knowledge is always fun you never end with this it’s kind of like Christmas every day, whenever you buy a box, you don’t really know what’s coming to you, but you know, it’s never going to be a repeat cause I’m doing it I’m organizing it this way, nor am I ever going to send you like, just one of these random books, like I have a series, right? I mean, obviously, I’m not going to do that, that just doesn’t make any sense. And I’m not going to send you a Spanish book if the rest of them were English, I will have some, some different languages, so I’m not only thinking of English. Let’s look through, see if you see a couple, maybe a book or so that you might like, I mean, it’s kind of difficult, you’re just seeing the tops of books and things. But I mean, education, you never know like plant physiology.

Planet Earth Floods

All right, let’s go a little bit into … We’ll do one of these little biographies. Yeah, I should have picked underground worlds, but whatever. We got … This is Planet Earth Floods. Look at all that water. Let’s see, this is a time … Where is it? Sorry.

Time Life Books. This is when Time Life used to make lots of books. They have a lot of biographies. All right. Let’s see what we got. Excuse me. Floods That Come in a Flash. Is that the whole book? Yeah. Well, these chapters were pretty long. Right? Floods That Come in a Flash. 96.

What is this? What is it? 96. I keep getting … I love the ones with the pictures. Right? We get distracted. What are they doing over here? Floods That Come in a Flash. Look at them. They’re stuck in the … Look at that. They’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. That would be miserable. Look at it.

“A mother and child perch precariously on the roof of their submerged automobile as the waters from the flash floods swirl around them.” Yuba City, California, ’55. Trapped atop a car for seven hours. Do you even see the car? I don’t see the car at all, dude. That’s seven hours stuck like that. That would be … Not only would it be scary, that would be absolutely horrendously miserable.

It’s just showing us a little bit of damage. Is this? Yeah. Look, I think this is … This is it before, then a flash flood came. Right? And this is it right after the flash flood. It says nine members of the family … Goodness, gracious. That’s terrible. Nine people drowned in that flash flood. And look, the house doesn’t even … Look, the house … There’s nothing behind here.

Look, the house then was drug away. Wow. Look at this stuff. Right here, we got the severe thunderstorms. Yeah, okay. A severe thunderstorm starts to develop. Masses of low-lying, warm, humid air are sent whirling upward by the atmospheric disturbance and condense into a billowing cloud.

When the cloud rises to 50,000 feet, it is ascent and it is checked and a white, anvil-shaped cap appears, blown horizontally by prevailing winds. Rain begins to fall, producing downdrafts that eventually dissipate the cloud.

So, that right there is what creates severe thunderstorms. That’s crazy. Very interesting. Look at these pictures. This is North Dakota, 1970. How old is this book? Okay, so here we go. We got gauging … Are we still on the same chapter? What is all this stuff? No, no, no. We’re done. We’re out of there. You see, this is a … No. Are we? Could be.

No. We sure are not. It looks like a flash flood to me. Look at these pictures. Yeah. Look at that. That’s a flash flood. Wow. All right. So, this picture right here, which was a 100-year-old … What is it? What did I say? Fieldstone mill? I don’t know what that is, but whatever. On some river I can’t pronounce. This one right here … Had tons of explosive magnesium stored.

And the floodwaters triggered the whatever, and it made a violent chemical reaction and it exploded it. Making the people not being able to get close to take care of it, which that is super scary. Because if you think about it, all this water right there would be contaminated. Right? With probably poisonous water, chemical water. That’s crazy. That is crazy.

Let’s see if we got any more pictures. A little town that faced a torrent. Oh, man. Look at the water coming. Imagine that’s coming at you. What are you going to do? Oh, here’s some pictures. You see the … I guess this is a flash flood. Yeah, look at it. Kind of in the middle of it, and kind of straight in the middle. Middle of the night. See that … That’s what would be scary.

That would be like … This is sad. So, they were driving down the road, and the bridge came out on them. And then, the baby, the grandmother, and the mother, all three of them died. But again, man, at nighttime. That would be terrible. So, yeah. Flash flooding.

There … Honestly, I hear it all the time. I live in North Carolina, but I’ve never really … I mean, I’ve heard it my entire life. Flash flood warnings. And I’ve seen flash floods. Right? And they literally come out of nowhere. But I had no idea that they could be this destructive. That’s just crazy. Wow. That’s crazy. All right.
